Choosing between Monoplace and Multiplace Hyperbaric Chamber

Multiplace hyperbaric chamber or Monoplace hyperbaric chamber, which one to choose? We often come across this question. Although, both these chambers serve the same purpose, but they have their difference.

Understanding these differences will help you make choose the right chamber. In addition, there are some other factors that play an important role when deciding between both these chambers. Remember, we are not saying one chamber is better than the other.

On the contrary, our objective is for you to understand how these chambers act differently while serving the same purpose. This blogpost is dedicated to the above question. We will provide you everything in detail. So, without any further delay, let us get to the point.

Monoplace Vs Multiplace Hyperbaric Chamber

Multiplace hyperbaric chamber

History -Multiplace hyperbaric chamber

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen while being under increased atmospheric pressure. The treatment is effective for treating a number of diseases. It enhances the body’s natural healing mechanism by delivering oxygen deep down into the tissues.

You will be surprised to know that hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment that dates back to the 1600s. Yes, the modern sophisticated chambers have come along a few decades back, however, the concept has their years for centuries. People have been truly benefiting from this amazing concept so far.

Henshaw, a British clergyman was the first one to build an oxygen chamber. He was successfully running that chamber in his time. The reason he developed the structure—Domicilium- was to provide treatment for a multitude of diseases.

To pressurize the chamber, he used the air and in case of pressuring it, there were bellows. Later, a French surgeon continued the idea of using pressurized air to treat patients for various issues. Due to the effectiveness of the treatment, the French surgeon came up with a mobile operating room.

He designed the room in 1879, and it was successful. Similarly, in 1928, Dr.Orvile had a 6 stories high hospital called the Steel Ball Hospital. It had a diameter of 64 feet and had the ability to reach up to 3 atmospheres of pressure.

However, in 1930, the government closed down the hospital as there was not enough scientific evidence claiming the fact that hyperbaric oxygen therapies are effective. However, later during World War II, the chamber was reconstructed. The army did work with it.

At the moment, the United States of America has approved hyperbaric oxygen therapy for a number of treatments. There are several facilities all around America as well as other parts of the world, offering this facility.

Different Oxygen Chambers

Now that we have the basics of how these chambers came into existence, let us focus on the differences between these chambers.

When you give a patient 100% oxygen under pressure, his or her hemoglobin saturates. However, if you dissolve the oxygen within the plasma you would be able to hyper-oxygenate the blood. It is possible to administrate the patient with systemic oxygen using two different types of chambers.

The first one is the Monoplace chambers and the second is the Multiplace chambers. It is possible to use both these types of chambers for treating diving injuries, routine wound care, or patient who are in a serious condition.

Monoplace Chamber

A Monoplace chamber compresses an individual at one time. In most cases, you will find that Monoplace chambers in a reclining position. However, there is some upright as well. The design of the chamber greatly depends upon your personal requirement.

For instance, you may not be comfortable lying down, you can choose a Monoplace chamber that lets you have the treatment in a sitting position. The gas that pressurizes the vessel is one-hundred percent oxygen.

In addition, there are chambers that come with an additional mask. This mask lets them alternate berating gas, for example, the air. All the equipment is present outside the chamber. Moreover, the chamber assistant is situated outside it.

He or she would be conducting on the monitoring from the outside. Only a limited number of ventilation ducts and intravenous lines go inside the hull. You can have mild to hard Monoplace hyperbaric oxygen chambers.

Multiplace Hyperbaric Chamber

Contrary to Monoplace chambers, we have Multiplace hyperbaric chambers. Unlike the Monoplace chambers, where you can treat just one person at the same time. With Multiplace chambers, it is possible to treat multiple people at one time.

Another difference between the Monoplace and Multiplace is that either an observer or a nurse is inside the chamber to monitor the patient. The observer would provide all the required assistance to the patient.

He or she would also be responsible for the manipulation of the equipment and in case there is some sort of emergency. In Multiplace chambers, the patient is able to breathe one-hundred percent oxygen using either a close-fitting plastic hood or a mask.

Multiplace chambers offer higher atmospheres of pressure. It is possible to pressurize the chamber till 6ATA. In case, the patient requires a mixture of other cases as well such as helium or nitrogen. He would have a dedicated mask.

This would ensure that only that particular patient gets the mixtures and the employee is safe from it. All the equipment that a patient would require is put inside the chamber with the patient. This was not the case with Monoplace oxygen chambers.

It is important to measure the nitrogen intake of the patient especially because he or she is breathing the air without the additional mask during the treatment. Monitoring nitrogen intake would eliminate issues like decompression sickness.

HBOT and FDA

Now that you have a clear understanding of the difference between the Multiplace hyperbaric chamber and the Monoplace chamber. You, need to focus on the factors that play a role while choosing one of the two. Also, see what the Food and Drug Administration has to say about HBOT.

According to FDA, you can use the therapy for a couple of medical condition including

  • Skin grafts
  • Radiation Damage
  • Hypoxia
  • Crush Injuries
  • Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
  • Brain Injuries
  • Anemia
  • Gas or Air Embolism

Factors When choosing a Chamber

  • The type of chambers available within your desired Facility. Not all facilities offer Multiplace oxygen chambers.
  • If you prefer to be alone during the treatment time, you can go with Monoplace chambers.
  • In case you have a problem being enclosed alone in a small room, the Multiplace chamber would be the better choice. As you will have people around you.
  • You can have oxygen therapy within your home with the Monoplace chamber. However, for multiple places, you will have to go to the desired medical care center.

It makes it enhances its overall performance. Both of these chamber types are effective. You can choose the one that you are comfortable with. If you want to be left alone during the session, you should opt for the Monoplace chamber.
